Zebra ZD510-HC

The ZD510-HC is a specialist, not a general-purpose desktop printer: it takes only Zebra's own Z-Band wristband cartridges — pop one in and print, with a smart chip in the cartridge handling automatic calibration — rather than a roll of generic label stock. It's validated for use with major hospital Admission, Discharge and Transfer (ADT) systems (Allscripts, CareFusion, Cerner, CPSI, Epic, McKesson), and native ZPL support makes migrating from an older Zebra printer, including the legacy HC100, straightforward.

Print width is fixed to one of three cartridge sizes — 19.05, 25.4 or 30.16 mm — at 300 dpi, up to 558 mm of print length. Speed depends on the cartridge: 51 mm/s for healthcare wristbands, 102 mm/s for the brighter Z-Band Fun and Z-Band Splash hospitality bands. Direct thermal only, so there's no ribbon to secure, incinerate or shred for HIPAA compliance. Memory is 512 MB Flash and 256 MB SDRAM.

Standard connectivity is USB, USB Host, 10/100 Ethernet and Bluetooth Low Energy, with a factory-installed 802.11ac Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.1 dual radio as an option; NFC lets a compatible phone tap to pair (Bluetooth LE and NFC aren't available on the EMEA-only Ethernet-only build). The housing is disinfectant-ready and UV-resistant for hospital cleaning protocols, the power supply is IEC 60601-1 compliant, and Z-Band wristbands themselves are tested two to six times more durable against hand-sanitizer exposure than competitors', staying scannable for longer than an average patient stay.
