The RE40 is for building RFID into someone else's device rather than buying a reader. It comes as a surface-mount module or on a PCB carrier board, depending on how much integration flexibility the design needs.
It is one of the smallest modules in its class, which is what makes it usable in portable as well as fixed designs, and its radio sensitivity supports Dense Reader Mode for reading 250 tags per second. Zebra's 123RFID desktop utility configures and manages it, and a developer kit is available for testing and integration.
